Saint John the Evangelist, Boston, MA
This stained glass window brings together a deeply contemplative and symbolic design, created to inspire reflection and meditation. At its heart is a chalice form that merges elements of two historic Revere chalices, gracefully framed by the spiraling geometry of a nautilus shell. The spiral culminates in the Host of the Eucharist, rendered in hand-blown antique opal and streaky glass that captures and diffuses light with a gentle, luminous quality.
An abundance of grapes overflows from the chalice, their deep wine tones echoed throughout the composition, reminiscent of the ruby jewels of the original Revere design. Complementing the grapes, a curved wreath of golden wheat sweeps through the window, its subtle hues achieved through silver stain and acid etching techniques, all harmonizing with the shell’s natural arc.
The background subtly incorporates an image of the original St. John the Evangelist Church — a quiet homage that will resonate especially with those familiar with the chapel's history. Throughout the window, cobalt blue glass, selected from the earliest stages of the design process, anchors the color palette. Accents of blue-green, evocative of the St. Paul’s logo, add depth and dimension.
In the upper corners, stylized illustrations of St. John and St. Paul are embedded as mysterious, near-hidden text figures — a nod to ancient illuminated manuscripts and an invitation to closer contemplation.
Symbols emerge and recede within the intricate design, inviting viewers to return again and again, discovering new details with each visit. More than a decorative element, the window serves as a meditative focal point — visually captivating, spiritually resonant, and quietly profound.
